Talk about it

  • How did Hessa know the prize was a trick?
  • Why did Sparky ask Saud to keep a secret? What would you do?
  • How do you think Mariam felt? How did the Kindness Wave help?
  • Who are the people on your Safety Rope?

Class Pearl Necklace

Draw a big necklace on the board. After each lesson a child adds that day's pearl. When all six shine, read the pledge together and hand out certificates.

Six short lessons, one for each pearl

Lesson 1

The Secret Key Pearl

Children explain who may know a password and build a strong practice password from three silly words.

Lesson 2

The Stop and Think Pearl

Children spot the clues of a tricky message: a prize that is too good to be true, a hurry, a request for a password and a strange link.

Lesson 3

The Treasure Chest Pearl

Children sort information into treasure (keep private) and things that are fine to share.

Lesson 4

The Falcon Eyes Pearl

Children understand that anyone can pretend online and that a real friend never asks for secrets from family.

Lesson 5

The Kind Words Pearl

Children recognize unkind messages, describe how they feel and practice kind replies.

Lesson 6

The Dana Pearl

Children name their trusted grown-ups and know that telling never gets them in trouble.

Each lesson uses the story and activity pages in the book. The full lesson steps are in the free Teacher Guide.

For Families

Children learn online safety best from the grown-ups they trust. Small habits make a big difference.

1

Keep screens in family spaces.

Use devices in shared rooms like the living room, not behind closed doors.

2

Promise: telling never gets you in trouble.

Children hide problems when they fear losing their devices. Thank them for telling you.

3

Turn on child accounts and parental controls.

Set them up on phones, tablets, apps and game consoles.

4

Check age ratings.

Look at the rating before downloading an app or game.

5

Practice Stop and Think together.

Fake prize, parcel and bank messages on SMS and WhatsApp fool adults too. Talk about them out loud.

6

Keep locations private.

Turn off location sharing in apps and review privacy settings together.

7

Lock family accounts well.

Use long, unique passwords and turn on two step verification.

8

Explore together.

Play their games and ask at dinner: "What did you see online today?"

Dinner table questions

  • What was the best thing you saw online today?
  • Did anything online make you feel confused, worried or upset?
  • Which game or app do you like most right now? Can you show me?
  • Has anyone you do not know sent you a message?
  • If a message said you won a prize, what would you do?
  • Who would you tell if something online felt wrong?

If something goes wrong

  1. Stay calm and say thank you. Your child came to you. Praise them for telling, even if they made a mistake.
  2. Do not reply. Do not answer the scammer, bully or stranger, and do not send money or codes.
  3. Save the evidence. Take screenshots of messages, names and dates before anything is deleted.
  4. Block and report. Use the block and report buttons in the app or game.
  5. Secure accounts. If a password was shared, change it now and turn on two step verification.
  6. Get help. For threats, blackmail or anything serious, contact your country's official cybercrime reporting service and the school.
